The European Union (EU) has taken a pioneering step in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) with the introduction of the AI Act in April 2021. This groundbreaking legislation represents the first-ever comprehensive legal framework for AI on a global scale. The core objective of the AI Act is to foster "trustworthy AI" within the EU. This translates to ensuring that AI systems deployed within the bloc adhere to fundamental rights, prioritize safety, and operate within ethical boundaries. By addressing the potential risks associated with powerful AI models, the EU aims to strike a balance between encouraging innovation and safeguarding its citizens.

The AI Act categorizes AI systems based on the level of risk they pose. High-risk systems, such as those used in facial recognition, credit scoring, or autonomous vehicles, will face stricter regulations. These regulations include mandatory conformity assessments, robust data governance practices, and clear human oversight mechanisms. Conversely, lower-risk AI systems will be subject to less stringent controls.

The EU's proactive approach to AI regulation has garnered significant international attention. The AI Act is expected to set a precedent for other countries and regions grappling with the ethical and legal implications of AI development.
